Barcelona
The city of Barcelona is another European city that dates back to the Romans, originally named Barcino. One can explore the city's ruins by going to a museum underneath the city, where they have excavated full blocks of Roman foundations.
If you're more into the Middle Ages, venture to the Basilica of Santa Maria del Mar, a beautiful church erected and paid for by its members during the 14th century. Or visit the sculpture by Antoni Llena celebrating the Catalonians that used to build human towers 9 or 10 people high during festivals.
But that doesn't mean Barcelona hasn't evolved. La Rambla, one of the city's main streets, takes visitors past La Boqueria, a food market dating to the mid-1800s; the street contains several modern artworks, including a mosaic by Joan Miró. Of course, the ultimate modern masterpiece in Barcelona is la Sagrada Familia, the church designed by Gaudi in the late 19th century, still under construction today.
