Vienna

20140915_Austria_Vienna_KartnerStrasse.JPG

The Kartner Strasse, one of the main shopping districts in the city.

The city of Vienna smells like sausages, sounds like music, and celebrates the Hapsburgs. Yes, a bit of a stereotype. But it's impossible to avoid these parts of its heritage as one wanders the city. The Hapsburgs ruled for 800 years in these parts, and from monuments honoring the dead from the plague, to massive palaces and homes in and around Vienna, there are many signs of their contributions to Austria.

Beethoven and his counterparts are celebrated where they lived and by what they created, particularly at the House of Music and the opera house. And, honestly, as one wanders the streets of the city, the smell of sausages, sauerkraut and Wiener schnitzel are a reminder that you're in a unique place, far from home.
